Wayne Thiebaud Cakes

3rd-5th graders learned about the life and artistry of Wayne Thiebaud through a series of slides and examples of his work. Into this lesson I worked in and intro to perspective and color theory. We explored the vivid colors and sharp contrast Thiebaud used to depict shadows and depth in his work. Each student learned how to draw a variety of three dimensional cakes and choose which style they preferred. The students then used oil pastels to mimic the color seen in Thiebaud’s work to create their own version of pop-art.
